The barbed spikes positioned at the forefront of the net pierce the front tires of the moving vehicle. Subsequently, the net envelops the front tires, pulling taut beneath the vehicle to immobilize the wheels and halt the vehicle’s motion.
X-Net stands as the only man portable, non-lethal solution for vehicle arrest available today. It brings the target vehicle to a complete standstill, under control, regardless of tire type.
This system’s mobility and swift deployment capability excel in comparison to alternatives like spike strips or electronic engine disruption, a method effective only with specific engine management systems.
The X-Net (VLAD) "Vehicle Lightweight Arresting Device" is the only man portable, non-lethal vehicle arresting solution available today. It brings the target vehicle to a complete standstill, under control, irrespective of standard or run flat tires. Manually deployed in under 20 seconds, the X-Net employs a unique spiked net design. The barbed spikes in the leading edge of the net pierce the front tires of the moving vehicle. The net then envelopes the front tires and is pulled tight under the vehicle to stop the wheels rotating and bring the vehicle to a standstill. With over four thousand units in service worldwide, this tried and tested system has been adopted and endorsed to cope with the most demanding situations by both military and police forces.

Conventional systems have relied on puncturing tires. The risk is that the vehicle has the potential to continue its progress in an uncontrolled state before eventually coming to a halt. It’s these issues, with the inherent dangers they carry, that QinetiQ scientists have addressed head-on. The result of this work is the X-Net, offering distinct advantages over other systems. Its portability and rapid deployment capability easily outperform alternatives such as spike strips or electronic engine disruption, a method that’s only effective on certain kinds of engine management systems.
X-Net® is manufactured from Dyneema, an extremely strong but lightweight Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) with excellent resistance to water, moisture, most chemicals, UV light and micro-organisms and is 15 times stronger than steel. The X-net is listed in the current Counter-Materiel Non-Lethal Weapons list for the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program (JNLWP) for the US Department of Defense and is in use with the US Marine Corps, US Special Operations Command, US Border Control and the US Army. In the United Kingdom, it was used in a road denial mode by the British Police tasked to secure the area around the 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markel.
