A Vintage Petite Chair evokes pleasant memories of a Circa 1940 Harold Elferdink Nantucket Sewing, Nursing, Bedroom, Slipper Rocking Chair. Elferdink's Nantucket Furniture Shop in Sawyer, Michigan (factory in Grand Rapids Michigan) around 1940. The chair style, called the Nantucket, was an authentic reproduction of a Victorian chair made between 1800-1840. The small arm less rocker was used for handwork such as knitting or needle point or as a nursing chair.
The slipper chair first appeared in Europe during the late 1600s. They were given their name due to their low seat height and short legsāit was said that they looked like someone had put slippers on them. And that's exactly what they were used for: a place to sit while slipping on shoes.
Since then, iconic decorators have their own slipper chairs and incorporated them into designs. ''I've used slipper chairs for years,'' decorator Mario Buatta told The New York Times. ''Not only do they fit places where it would be hard to put a full-sized chair, they're also charming. Besides, I've also noticed kids like them. When they sit in a slipper chair, they feel big and definitely grown-up.''
