Highline Public Schools is currently hiring 20 AmeriCorps Student Success Coaches to serve during the 2018-19 school year. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Secondary Success & College Readiness team at Highline and support our promise to know every student by name, strength, and need. Success Coaches work at one of our 9 middle and high schools & provide differentiated interventions across our system to help all students stay on track. Coaches build relationships with students, staff, families, and the community to strengthen our school system and ensure that all students have the skills and support to graduate prepared to choose their future.

Three opportunities:
1. Student Success Coaches (12 positions) who serve 8th and 9th grade students who are off track through mentoring, tutoring, coaching, skill building, family engagement, and advocacy.
2. Pathway Coaches (4 positions) who were 11th grade students and meet individual with all 11th grade students in Highline Public Schools to ensure that all students have a step-by-step plan for college & career after high school
3. Restorative Justice Coaches (4 positions) who partner with students who have been suspended or expelled and ensure that they stay on a path to success by mentoring, tutoring, supporting restorative practices & helping to rebuild peer to peer and student to teacher relationships

AmeriCorps members receive the following benefits:
• Monthly Living stipend of $1,202.86 per month provided by WSC (before taxes)

• $5,815 Education Award provided by National Service Trust (upon successful completion of 10.5 month term of service and 1,700 hours of service)

• Payment of interest on qualified student loans that accrued during the service term

SCHEDULE: schedule may vary depending on school site between 7:30 - 5:00, Monday - Friday for a total of 40 hours including a full day of training each week.
SUMMARY: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a six-year grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education to significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP Highline's vision is that all students are academically, socially, and financially prepared to enter and complete the postsecondary program or institution of their choice. GEAR UP's objectives are:
• Increase academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education. 95% of HPS students increase their academic performance and 75% are academically prepared to succeed at college-level work
• Increase high school graduation and postsecondary participation rates. 95% of HPS students graduate from HS and 85% enroll in postsecondary
• Increase students' and their families' knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and finances. 95% of HPS students and families increase their educational expectations and knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and financing 95% of HPS students and families increase their educational expectations and knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation, and financing

The Student Success Coach will be assigned to serve at 1 of 12 middle and high schools in Highline Public Schools to provide critical coordination of services including comprehensive mentoring, outreach, and supportive services to increase student engagement. The Student Success Coach will work in partnership with the Success Dean to provide supports and interventions to ensure students don't fall of track academically and graduate prepared to enter and succeed in post-opportunities. Student Success Coach will work one-on-one, in small groups, and school-wide to build a college-going culture and support a path to success for every student.

CONTEXT AND MISSION: Highline Public Schools serves approximately 19,000 students in the communities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Boulevard Park and White Center Heights in Washington State. Starting in the fall of 2012, the Highline community came together to develop a four-year strategic plan outlining the community's bold goals and big dreams for its children. The plan's promise is that every student in Highline Public Schools is known by name, strength, and need, and graduates prepared for college, career, and citizenship.
The collective commitment embodied in the plan is grounded in the community's deep belief that Highline students are capable of reaching the plan's ambitious goals and is driven by students' aspirations for their future.
The instructional vision articulated in the plan is organized around Four Pillars that guide professional and organizational practices:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some Student Success Coordinators may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
• Work collaboratively with the Success Dean to identify a small cohort of students using On-Track Early Warning Indicators and design appropriate interventions and supports to increase attendance and academic success of students showing signs of falling off track. The Student Success Coach will work with students in a classroom setting, individually, in small groups, and after school to provide academic assistance in core classes and will work collaboratively with a broad range of partners including teachers, counselors, students, parents, families, and community partners.
• The Student Success Coach will provide individualized support to students and families both in-person and via email, phone, and social media; support students successfully returning to the building after suspension or long absences; support and expand AVID strategies including in class supports; and create and facilitate programming during school breaks: spring break, summer, etc.
• The Student Success Coach will maintain accurate records of daily contacts and activities with students, complete required reporting and administrative duties and update student records, track progress, and prepare reports as assigned.
• The Student Success Coach will contribute to the ongoing development and continuous improvement of the GEAR UP project including preparing and delivering dynamic and engaging college and career access programming during school breaks and for special events, workshops, advisory, career talks, panels, campus visits, and assisting GEAR UP staff and other sites during GEAR UP activities, workshops, field trips, and cultural enrichment experiences.
• Develop a consistent follow-up and outreach plan for ensuring student tasks and program goals are completed
• Collaborate and maintain relationships with other AmeriCorps Student Success Coordinators, staff, teachers, and counselors including attendance and participation in weekly AmeriCorps trainings, meetings, and planning sessions
• Collaborate with out of school time providers and community partners to keep youth and families engaged in college readiness programming.
• Minimum 2 years college experience
• Commitment to public service, civic engagement, racial equity and social justice
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
• Energy, passion and creativity to inspire students, including the ability to lead engaging large group presentations and develop relationships with students
• Upbeat, positive, outgoing, personable and able to relate well with diverse populations and age groups, with particular emphasis on working with young people, ages 12 - 18
• Ability to work flexible hours to include out of school time activities and field trips which may include nights and/or weekends.
• Ability to help students in math (up to algebra), science, reading and writing
• Demonstrated dependability, initiative, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team while observing and complying with all rules and standards of your school and Highline Public Schools
• Ability to handle potentially stressful situations calmly and appropriately
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, and social media applications
• Must have reliable transportation to and from work site

• Bachelors degree
• Previous teaching, tutoring, mentoring, leadership or youth development experience (work and/or volunteer)
• Experience working within diverse communities
• Knowledge of college admissions, financial aid and issues related to student success in higher education
• Bilingual in Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Vietnamese, Amharic, or another of our top languages
• Experience working with ELL students and families
• Knowledge of South King County communities and resources
• Knowledge of early warning indicators & reengagement strategies
• Experience using technology to support blended learning techniques (using technology in classrooms)

• U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident
• Must successfully pass a background check
• Valid Photo ID
• Successful application and acceptance to AmeriCorps Program
