Sample sediment splitter used for reducing sample size of aggregate or sediment for further analysis for construction, geological or archaeological studies.

The splitter I am selling here is used and in excellent functional condition but has some superficial rust on surfaces where the paint has been warn off by splitting sediment samples containing gravel. It is stored in the back of a storage unit and was not readily available to photograph.
Sample splitters work by reducing the sample size by directing the flow of the aggregate into two pans through adjoining chutes. The samples are then used to evaluate quality of the aggregate, size distributions, or obtaining properties necessary for production of concrete mixtures. Per the ASTM C702 standard, larger field samples need to be reduced to a smaller size for more convenient lab testing purposes. This methodology ensures that the smaller test sample is representative of the entire stockpile.
This unit was used on an archaeological excavation project for sorting midden samples containing beach gravels, shellfish remains, sand, and animal bones into subsamples for quantitative analysis.
Included in this sale are two steel pans that were custom welded so that the sediments passing through the baffles could be captured in buckets instead of the two trough-shaped pans that came from the manufacture.
This model sells for $1.400 new so this is a good deal for a hard-to-find used one in good condition.
