Awesome, ultra lively and resonant classic fully hollow German made Hofner. This guitar is in amazing condition for its age with only the usual light signs of wear. The small super lightweight (just over 4 lbs) hollow body combined with the original single coils can sound surprisingly thunderous with the right amp combo, at the same time it isn't a deep body so it doesn't take up a lot of sonic space and can be light and sweet too depending on what you are after.
This guitar has a variety of features particular to its 1957 provenance. This is all just full disclosure because I like to be totally clear and upfront about everything I know about it:
- I don't know all the Hofner history but as with many of these early Club 50s it's branded for the Swedish market as a Model 127 and has a Halmens label on the headstock. It's a 1957 German made Hofner.
- It has newer pots under the control plate and the old school 50s wiring where one pickup volume cuts out the other pickup when turned all the way down - this is not a defect, just a classic wiring thing that from my understanding can easily be modded if desired, otherwise all the controls work perfectly and as expected.
- It has no internal ground wire so there is an unobtrusive external wire currently installed that works perfectly to remove buzz/hum - if desired can be removed in a minute.
- The neck doesn't have an internal truss rod but it plays cleanly and perfectly in all registers with a medium action (.11" at the 12th fret on both high and low E). I'm guessing it's been solidly this way for many decades without issue.
- The neck is fairly narrow and thick in the 50s style, it might feel strange to folks with large hands unaccustomed to the feel. The nut (zero fret) is around 1.57". I'd say I have medium hands and I never had an issue with the playability.
- Pickguard not included
- Original case with replacement handle included.
I love this guitar but I rotate through a Lot of gear and I'm just selling to pay off some Reverb purchases. I accept Venmo/Paypal/Cash and am open to vintage (or vintage voiced) trades!
