BUILD AMAZING ARCHITECTURAL AND MUSEUM SCALE MODELS

We are looking to fill one of the 2 following positions:
POSITION 1 ENTRY LEVEL
You must have an eye for detail and a passion to learn how to use the following tools, materials and glues:
TOOLS: table saw, panel saw, jig saw, band saw, hand drill, drill press, vertical mill, nail gun, bench grinder, buffer, pencil grinder, router, disc sander, oscillating sander, miter saw, sand blaster, air brush, planer.
MATERIALS: acrylic, styrene, polycarbonate, ren shape 450, polyurethane foam, bass wood, maple, mahogany, oak, OSB, luan, lacquer based paints and primers, latex paints.
GLUES: contact cement, weldon 4, Weldon 16, epoxy, hot glue gun, various super glues, bondo, polystyrene resin.
From day one you will be thrown in doing the following tasks and more: building crates for models, building model stands that are very square and dimensionally accurate within 1/32", assisting in building fiberglass molds and castings, laminating model stands, making block buildings that will have nice lacquer finishes, painting topographical sites for architectural models. You must have CAD skills such as 2d AutoCAD or 3d Drawing such as Rhino. Using CAD software you will draw various simple elements that will be laser cut. You will be trained to operate the Laser cutter.
If you know Rhino then you will assist in creating drawings for 3D printing.
As your experience grows you will be given more challenging tasks and if this profession is your calling in 3-5 years you could have the skills of a Senior Model maker.
POSITION 2 SENIOR MODEL MAKER
At least 2 years experience building professionally, architectural scale models. We expect you to be proficient with all the tools and materials listed for the entry level position plus the following:
-Proficient with AutoCAD (Rhino or Illustrator a plus)
-Your peers consider you a craftsman/craftswoman
-Strong knowledge of model building techniques
-Ability to improve our model making capabilities by introducing new tools/processes/materials and software applications.
After working for us about a month, familiarizing yourself with our tools, materials, processes, and being trained how to operate our CNC laser, our expectations are as follows:
1. We can give you a set of AutoCAD dwgs of a 15 story Condo Building that is to be a full color, lasered acrylic presentation model at 1/16"=1'-0", and after 6 weeks and a few clarification questions you are finished fabricating the building.
2. A different fabrication project could be build a 1:10 scale model of the spacecraft Rosetta and Lander Philae using semi-accurate Rhino drawing, and photos. This totally awesome model goes to the Airbus museum in Washington DC.
3. Yet another project could be a 1:75 scale model of the Tunnel Boring Machine Bertha that reflects all the changes made by Hitachi after it was removed from the ground.
These are just a sample of actual projects we have completed recently.
For these positions we expect the following:
-Very comfortable with CAD software such as AutoCAD and Rhino. If you are good with any other 3d CAD software please let us know. We use 3d software to run our CNC and our 3D printers. Photoshop or Illustrator a plus, however Illustrator is preferred over Photoshop. Also solid understanding of Sketchup or Revit is a plus as well. PC proficient with Microsoft Office software.
-strong communication skills
-work efficiently with limited supervision
-put in the hours necessary to get the job done on time
-work overtime when necessary
-very good work ethic
Not required, but if you have a background in fabricating dioramas (such as train hobbyists) or scratch building any type of model (science fiction, RC trucks, airplanes etc)that would be a plus.
Not required, but if you have the following skills that would be a plus:
- Proficient at using an airbrush
- Ability to mix colors to match
- Program Arduino micro processors
-Paint in realism (either using air brush or paintbrushes)
-Home remodeling / home construction
-Automobile restoration (this means you know how to paint, sand, mask at a skilled level. Also, you are mechanically inclined and know how to use related tools.
-Familiar with DC electrical systems (low voltage)
-3d modeling using software
Our standard hours are Monday thru Friday 8am – 5pm. Weekends and evenings if necessary.
This is a full time position.
Entry level position is $16 - $19 per hour DOE
Senior Model Maker position is $20 - $24 per hour DOE
-Medical coverage after 2 months of employment. We pay 75%.
-2 weeks paid vacation/sick leave per year. After 2 years, vacation time is increased to 3 weeks.
-Retirement plan eligible after the first year. 100% match by Rauda Scale Models for every dollar invested up to 3% of income.
