Investment: $450 for the 4-week series.
Includes four weeks of live online instruction, custom workbooks, curated vocabulary lists, digital flashcards, and session recordings.
This is not your average French class.
Scene by scene, we move through rural France alongside filmmaker Agnès Varda and artist JR, learning vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and the art of conversation through the landscapes, faces, and stories they encounter. Each 90-minute session is built around the award-winning documentary Faces Places (Visages Villages) and uses film as the vehicle for advancing your comfort and confidence speaking in French.
This class is designed for students who:
- Have a basic knowledge of French but struggle to speak and/or understand.
- Studied French years ago but have retained very little.
- Are curious about French cinema, art, and culture and want language instruction that reflects their interests.
- Want to order at a café in Paris without instigating the waiter to answer them back in English.
- Conversational French: greetings, introductions, asking questions, and expressing opinions through real dialogue from the film.
- Grammar in context: present tense, the imparfait, the subjunctive, and direct pronouns y & en--taught through scenes, not textbooks.
- Vocabulary by theme: people, places, nature, food, animals, art, and rural French life.
- Pronunciation & accent reduction: regional accents, voice tone, and how locals actually speak.
- Culture & expressions: idioms, slang, and the art of storytelling--including a final exercise: raconte l'histoire d'un lieu où tu n'iras jamais.

How does it work?
We meet on Zoom. All you need is a computer, tablet, or phone and an internet connection. Each week you'll receive your workbook, vocabulary list, and flashcards ahead of class. Sessions are recorded so you never miss a thing.

Lisa Johns holds a B.A. in French Language & Literature from the University of Akron, a DSEF in Art History & Translation from l'Université Stendhal in Grenoble, France, and an MFA in Poetry & Nonfiction from the University of Southern California. She has twenty years of experience teaching French to adults in group and private settings.
