Second Use Building Materials, Seattle’s largest architectural salvage yard, is seeking a full-time staff member for our Salvage Crew and Store.
Our salvage crews go into houses and commercial spaces slated for remodel or demolition and harvest the good stuff (doors, cabinets, windows, appliances, flooring, hardware) to prevent it from going to waste.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Lead Architectural Salvage Technician is a leadership role in our Salvage Services Department, which undertakes the extraction and pick up of salvageable materials from both residential and commercial sites for resale.
The primary responsibilities of this position include serving as a primary contact with homeowners/suppliers, overseeing and working alongside crew-mates, as well as managing job site logistics and safety.
Additional responsibilities include overseeing truck/tool preparation before jobs, and facilitating truck unload and end-of-day cleaning/maintenance. This position is also responsible for assisting the Salvage Services Manager with staff trainings, clerical tasks, and infrastructural maintenance as needed.
Roughly 75% of a lead’s time in the department will be spent on onsite material extraction and pick-ups, 25% will be spent supporting the Salvage Services Manager, following up on completed jobs, and team/department development.
This 40-hour position requires 1 dedicated 10-hour shift working in another department within the company, in addition to assisting other departments when field work is complete or not available.
Typical Onsite Work Functions:
-Facilitate and engage in the safe and effective operation of tools and trucks; uphold safety plan set by Salvage Services manager, including the use of PPE and dust control, protocol around electrical and plumbing work, and proper extraction/staging criteria
-Delegate tasks and work with crew-mates to safely and efficiently complete material strip-outs and pick-ups
-Ensure that all crew-mates professionally represent the company on job sites in regards to communicating with contacts, noise pollution/music, language/conversational content, job site cleanliness, respectful handling of material/tools, etc.
-Drive trucks between job sites and stores, training provided
-Set and assist crew in maintaining work pace; gauge and alter pace based on environmental or worksite conditions as needed
-Oversee time management onsite, including arranging breaks, triaging materials, assisting in or re-delegating tasks as needed, and transitioning load out for a timely return to the shop, and unloading materials on arrival
-Typically work four, ten-hour days, including 1 weekend day
-Crossover work in other parts of the business, such as receiving, warehouse, and customer service, to help with overall business needs.
An ideal candidate will have these qualifications:
-Self-motivated and reliable worker
-Enthusiasm for a safe work environment
-Willing to put in a full 10-hour day at 100%
-Able/willing to safely lift 75 lbs and move heavy materials all day long
-Experience with building salvage
-Experience with construction tools and trades
-Experience with positive team leadership
-Valid driver license, clean driving record, and experience driving trucks
-Knowledge of building materials
