Antique Japanese three-section stacking tansu chest crafted from kiri (paulownia) wood with original hand-forged iron hardware. Designed for portability, it separates into three sections, an upper cabinet with sliding doors, a central chest with full-width drawers, and a lower section with smaller drawers and side carrying handles. In total, the chest features thirteen drawers of differing sizes, including two small interior drawers concealed behind the sliding doors of the upper cabinet. The kiri wood has aged to a warm natural tone with a dry, matte patina and visible grain that reveal its hand-crafted character. The original iron fittings display wear and tonal variation from age and handling, adding depth and authenticity. A fine example of Meiji-to-Taishō period tansu craftsmanship, this piece balances refined simplicity with traditional joinery and functional beauty, ideal for Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, or rustic modern interiors. Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. Shows separations and cracks in the back panels, sliding door, and some drawers, small losses, oxidation to hardware, and general surface wear throughout. Some of the black metal trim pieces are bent up the ends. All drawers and doors operate smoothly for tansu, which never features glides.
46" wide, 15.75" deep, and 60" high.
