The men and women of US Seafoods share an uncommon lifestyle, working on the Bering Sea and the North Pacific Ocean off of the coast of Alaska. Most of the employees of US Seafoods are seagoing personnel who work and live onboard one of the company's 11 fishing vessels. Crew members work 7 days a week for 12-18 hours per day performing strenuous manual labor without a day off for several weeks at a time.
Deckhand Job Duties:
Performs any combination of the following duties aboard fishing vessel. Stands lookout steering and engine-room watches. Attaches nets, slings, hooks, and other lifting devices to cables, booms, and hoists. Loads equipment and supplies aboard vessel by hand or using hoisting equipment. Signals other workers to move, hoist, and position loads. Operates skiffs to transport crewmembers. Repair rips, tears and damage to fishing gear and nets. Attaches accessories, such as floats, weights, and markers to nets and lines. Pulls and guides nets and lines onto vessel. Removes fish from nets. Secures and removes vessel's docking lines to and from docks and other vessels.
