This is an Estate sale for a Rare 1987/1988 BMW M3 E-30, AK-03. This particular M3 is the 532nd US car off the line in May of 1987, Vin # WBSAK0308J2195533. Owned and stored in the same climate-controlled Garage in Seattle for the last 23 years, this is a windows-out restoration from the ground up, modded then driven spiritedly by an avid local, 84 year old BMW Enthusiast.
The owner purchased this car in October 1997 on a salvage title from an insurance theft recovery in CA. It was purchased from Campbell-Nelson VW in Edmonds, WA for $3,800. The interior had been stripped, along with a minor wheel well and engine electrical fire noted by CarFax. This M3 was originally delivered in Diamontschwarz in New Jersey from the factory.
It is a 3 owner car, with the original owner in NY, second owner in the BayArea, where the car was stolen and declared an insurance loss. The present owner here in Seattle did a windows-out total reconstruction from the ground-up between 1998-2000 with a Color-Change from Diamontschwarz to Porsche Guards Red to the owners liking, at Sunrise Auto Body in McCleary, WA. The new State of WA Rebuilt title was certified in 2000. The M3 had 96,000 miles on the odometer at that point in time per CarFax.
The interior, mechanical, mods and restoration, paint and body work alone, were done at substantial cost, ($25K in 1999 dollars), probably closer to $35K if done in today’s dollars, No expense was spared by the owner, also adding a real nice touch EVO front spoiler. The re-paint was believed to have been done with a 2-stage DuPont Polyurethane product. Both body and frame are absolutely rust-free thanks to this proper restoration and being kept in the same climate controlled garage for the last 23 years. The car was repainted the same Guards Red color again in 2017 by Sunrise at a cost of $7,000; due to rock chips/road rash from the owner taking the car skiing up I-90 to the Alpental Ski Resort.
This Getrag 5 Speed S-14 M3 is Garrett Turbocharged and inter-cooled along with a wastegate. The M3 is fuel injected with an older SDS EM-3 EFI monitored sensor system with coil pack. There is a fuel enrichment dial installed in the glovebox along with the SDS cable and programming display. The Garrett turbo was sourced/installed by Turbo Technology in Tacoma with 300+HP. The S-14 engine, cooling and drivetrain were built, and tuned by local performance shops Group 2 Motorsports and Auto Sport Seattle years ago during it’s restoration. The S-14 engine block and head were both machined and properly balanced. (Note, we are still awaiting word from the BMW Group Archives in Germany to confirm whether or not the M3’s S-14 block is the original one delivered with the car).
The sunroof looks and works perfect and is a pleasure to have open on a spirited sunny day drive! The dash pad, and interior are excellent. A Momo steering wheel is present. All glass is clear and free of imperfections. We feel this car offers a sound, rust free, amazing base both inside and out to customize further to the new owner’s liking or to return to stock M3 condition.
The M3’s gotcha’s in our opinion
*Factory Dash was replaced with a VDO instrument cluster with lots of gauges, but not stock. That dash and head unit are currently inoperative due to bad fuses and or wiring. We are also unsure about the additional miles of the car put on since restoration because of the VDO dash odometer being inoperative. We do have what’s remaining of the original cluster.
*The aftermarket Recaro seats, while very nice, comfy and supportive; the Sparco harnesses are not. This could be easily remedied with simply new belts or factory E-30/21 Recaro front seats to return to stock.
*The nice TSW forged Nurburgring wheels along with 255/35 ZR 18” Goodyears look fantastic, but the 18’s are really not the best fit and set-up for Seattle roads and this car. The new owner could go back to stock with factory Basket Weaves like the spare in the trunk.
*The SDS EFI system is persnickety and could stand to be replaced with a modern, more reliable and simpler to manage system, or possibly even revert back to the stock normally aspirated configuration.
We are offering this Rare survivor M3 for the first $39,950, Cash, OBRO, no trades. This is the last car for sale of the late owner’s collection, and the owners spouse would certainly like to see this car stay locally in the PNW, however if it doesn’t sell in a timely fashion, we will be listing it for auction. But unfortunately that goes along with added buyer and seller fees for both parties. So if you have serious interest, act quickly.
