Purchased used December 1962, original owner was Mrs. Winthrop Rockefeller's father, William Edris. Bill used this Rolls principally to drive movie stars to his theatres on their opening nights. The car is specially manufactured left hand drive to accommodate American clientele.
Rolls has been maintained in better than new condition for 57 years. Paint is RR original factory color, "Sand Beige" (i.e: champagne), serviced by Rolls Royce factory trained mechanics using RR parts, immaculate museum quality condition, housed in private climate controlled garage, complete service records, air conditioned, electric windows. In 1999 all stainless trim polished, leather renewed with RR Connelly hide, headliner replaced, Original AM radio kept and stored to update to new sound system, new state of art security system (theft/burglar/vibration), analog RR clock was stored to swap for equivalent digital RR clock, complement of RR spare parts (original oil filter plus added spin-on option), (original air filter plus added optional air filter which screens smaller particle sizes), exhaust system components replaced with new identical RR parts). The unique Rolls Royce power brake system used on all RR engines (powers brakes with or without engine running) has wheel brake cylinders replaced with corrosion proof brass as recommended and installed by RR factory mechanic, RR starter kept and replaced with lifetime warrantied starter recommended by RR mechanic to achieve a higher starting rpm, battery replaced with lifetime warrantied battery, headlights upgraded to halogen by RR mechanic.
Owner believes this is the most beautiful 1961 Silver Cloud in the Northwest, and kept in superb condition. It has been occasionally driven, upon request, in exchange for contributions for charities (fund raisers for schools and churches).
The Rolls is powered by a 6.3 liter aluminum engine with an 8 to 1 compression ratio, and a 4 speed automatic/manual override aluminum transmission. When I asked a RR mechanic at BMCD on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco about the horsepower of the Silver Cloud, he replied with a smile that it was "adequate". To a similar inquiry concerning gas mileage, the mechanic replied that if you needed to ask that question, you couldn't afford it. I have since learned through 50+ years of experience that, in spite of it's 4648 pound weight, it averages 15 mpg. To lighten the car further, Rolls Royce substituted aluminum for other components including the: differential, 4 entry doors, bonnet, boot, and more. The substitution of aluminum allowed an improvement in the power to weight ratio while eliminating the possibility of corrosion. Rolls Royce, an experienced manufacturer of aluminum aircraft engines, combined their experience with a 10 year development and test program to produce a new engine for use in all of its new automotive models. For years manufacturers of automobiles have used either a "cross" or "H" frame design - the cross frame design provides exceptional torsional stiffness which reduces rattles, the H frame design protects drivers and passengers from injury resulting from lateral impact. Rolls Royce employs both the cross and H frame designs in the Silver Cloud chassis, resulting in a torsional stiffness which is several times that normally found in high-end automobiles, like the Cadillac. This was done partly because Rolls are driven throughout the United Kingdom, and as a result encounter tougher road conditions.
The owner is selling, after 56 years of ownership, his one-of-a-kind antique Rolls Royce prestige luxury car due to failing health. This car must be seen and driven to appreciate, but only by serious purchasers please.
