Learning to Love Your Practice Time, with Ian Hughes
January 29th, 2022, 10am - 12am
Online AND In-Person

Jazz Night School

We all know that we’re supposed to practice… but oftentimes we pick up our instruments and have no idea what to work on. This can be an especially difficult question for an aspiring jazz musician, as the world of jazz improv is vast and can be quite daunting. This decision fatigue often leads to a lack of creativity in one’s practice time, i.e. playing the same scales or songs the same way every session or just a general lack of inspiration to practice.

In this workshop, we will answer the question of “what do I practice today?” by asking ourselves, “why am I practicing at all?” From there, we will develop a personalized approach to practice that is fun, rewarding, and hopefully very addictive.

In this two hour workshop we will:
Figure out why and what you want to practice.
Befriend your metronome. Learn to make it into a positive support figure, not negative reinforcement.
Start to train your ear to chords and intervals using games.
Discuss common roadblocks, plateaus, and misconceptions.
Leave the workshop having developed a fun and personalized routine that makes productive practice feel like play time.
Leave some time for Q+A about productive practice techniques.

This workshop is being offered as a hybrid, both online and in-person simultaneously, with a limited number of in-person participants. To participate in person, you will need to provide proof of vaccination and wear a mask. Further instructions will be sent following registration.
