In simple terms, Polishing Concrete is similar to sanding wood. With wood, you would start by sanding with rough sandpaper then finer sandpaper then another finer sandpaper and so on until smooth. Each step removes the rough scratches from the previous step.
Same as with Polished Concrete. With Polished Concrete, we use approximately 7 grinding/polishing steps, including 1 step of hardening/densifying and the final 2 step process of adding the sealer and burnishing. We start by grinding with “metal/diamonds” to remove the “cream” or “cap” off the concrete surface so you can start seeing the rocks or “Aggregate” below.
This gives you the “salt and pepper” look. This is the longest step and can take days or even weeks depending on the square footage and type of concrete (hard vs soft). Each step is a little quicker than the previous step. After the necessary steps of metal grinding, we move to resins and start to hone and polish the floor to a glossy shine. When we move to the resin steps, it is the same process from rough to smooth until you start seeing reflections of light off the floor to your correct polished shiny, glossy concrete surface. The process usually takes about a day per 500sf and a minimum of 3 days depending on the concrete being worked on.
The hardness of concrete, patching, and crack and joint treatment can add days to the job as well.We harden/densify the concrete also during this process while the concrete pores are still open to accept the hardener/densifier. This gives your floor more life, durability, and gloss. If you would like even more gloss, we can apply a topical sealer and come back the next morning to burnish with a high-speed burnisher as your last step.
