MONUMENTAL SCAVO GLASS VASE ON FIGURAL BRONZE STAND CREATED BY THE ITALIAN ARTIST ARCHIMEDE SEGUSO (1909-1999)
This very rare monumental scavo glass vase with figural cast bronze stand was created by Archimede Seguso at the studio Vetreria Artistica Archimede Seguso in Murano, Italy. The total height of the vase measures 25 3/4 inches. The very thick clear glass vase with "a scavo" exterior measures 21 1/4 inches in length and 13 inches in diameter at the widest point. The rim lip measures 6 5/8 inches with and opening of 5 7/8 inches. The bottom of the vase has the artist's engraved signature with notations: Seguso V. d'Arte 84 6/100 E [ see close-up photo ]. The bronze stand with rich green patina has three legs in the form of abstract nude males in Etruscan style measuring 19 5/8 inches to the top of the heads. The total weight is 26 pounds. [ V. d'Arte stands for Verti d'Arte. I believe that the 84 stands for the date it was made ].
CONDITION: There is some residue from the bronze green patina on the glass around the area where it rests in the base, otherwise the vase is in very fine condition, there are no chips and no cracks.
'Scavo' refers to a hot surface decoration technique whereby, during production, the surface of the glass is covered in salts and oxides, and sometimes ash, and then reheated to produce a rough opaque finish to replicate an ancient 'excavated' look.
