Vintage Signed W. Rinyo "Winter World" Oil Painting w/COA - Frame 19”x23”
frame 18.5” x 22.5”, image area 11.25” x 15.25”; on canvas; craquelure in upper area; certificate of authenticity on back; back of canvas slightly foxed
Found at an estate sale, this tranquil vintage 12" x 16" framed oil painting on canvas is entitled "A Winter World". It shows a rural cabin next to an ice-cover brook in a snow-covered landscape and is signed “W. Rinyo” in the lower left corner. This painting has a certificate of authenticity and a bid number sticker from Royal Art Ltd. on the back. There’s a large area of craquelure that’s especially conspicuous in the sky (see photos) and the back of the canvas is slightly foxed. It's framed in an attractive 18.5” x 22.5” wood frame.
As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the artist or about this history of this lovely painting, which I’d guess to date from the 1960’s or before. A friend knowledgeable about antiques tells me the burlap trim of the frame was something that was used in the 1960’s and 70’s. It was sold by the Royal Art Ltd., an auction house in North Hollywood, CA, specializing in fund-raising auctions. The certificate of authenticity is numbered 80-37628, suggesting it was sold in 1980.
The certificate of authenticity appears to have been taped to the back of the canvas before the painting was stapled to the stretcher (see photos). From this it appears that the painting could have been received by the auction house as a rolled canvas and then stretched and framed to add value, possibly using a suitable frame already on hand. If that’s the case it’s possible that the canvas is somewhat older than the frame. The number 37628 is also written in pencil on the back of the canvas, presumably to keep track of it before the COA was taped on. The foxing on the back of the canvas is mainly in the lower portion (see photos).
W. Rinyo was an oil painter, perhaps British, about whom I’ve found it very difficult to find any information. At least one other of his works, "All Alone", was also sold at auction in the early 1980’s by the Royal Art Ltd.
Over the years the frame has unfortunately acquired some minor damage (see photos). This framed painting weighs 3 lbs. 1 oz., making it easy to hang.
