Very Rare, dual transition Nisga's Nations art. John Joseph Telek was a First Nations sculptor of the Nisga'a nation in British Columbia, born into a family of artists, including his uncles Alver Tait and Norman Tait, also skilled carvers, and Telek began carving under Norman Tait's guidance while in high school in Vancouver. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of totem poles, notably one in Stanley Park and two for Capilano Mall in North Vancouver during the 1980s. Following a transformative near-death experience in a car accident, Telek developed a distinctive style, drawing on traditional Northwest coast techniques and influences from his studies in anatomy and sculpting techniques at Langara College - using primarily wood and incorporating materials like bone, moose hair, and abalone. He has had a number of international gallery exhibitions, and a Telek sculpture is on display at the Museum of Northern BC. Sadly, Ron passed away in 2017 but his creative legacy lives on.
