This a great new breed of grazing pig called Idaho Pasture Pigs. This is an intentional composite breed of Duroc, Berkshire, and KuneKune. The original breeding stock development began in 2007, and the first breeding stock was sold in 2012. I joined the breed as a registered breeder in 2016.
The founders chose Duroc for their great meat quality, fast growth rate, and relatively short snout. Berkshire, a Heritage breed, known for their excellent meat qualities, great mothering instincts, and gentle disposition. And KuneKune, as the base of this breed offering many great qualities to the mix; like their smaller size, extreme short, upturned snouts and excellent friendly dispositions.
We currently have unrelated breeding pairs, registered breeding stock and unregistered feeder companion pigs for sale. Our Piglets are out on pastures within the first week with their moms. Our sows usually wean the piglets themselves around 6-8 weeks of age making it a much smoother transition for the piglets. We train all our piglets to hot wire from birth so they are completely trained and ready to head out into pasture with ease as soon as you pick them up.
All our breeding stock are on site and available for viewing. Our breeding stock are great parents, with amazing friendly personalities. Our sows are allowed to free farrow. We do not use any type of farrowing crate with this breed. Both the parents and all of the piglets have been trained and are currently maintained on pasture with 2 wire electric fence. They can easily mingle and share pasture with cows, goats, sheep, horses, chickens, etc.
All our pigs are naturally raised WITHOUT hormones, antibiotics, or vaccines. We follow organic protocol on our farm including NO synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides.
Idaho Pasture Pigs are called IPP's for short. To read more about their story, visit this site http://idahopasturepigs.blogspot.com. Or, visit the Idaho Pasture Pig Registry at http://www.idahopasturepigregistry.com/breed-standard.
These pigs are an all natural, pasture based, meat pig. They have great personalities and are very friendly. A very docile breed, IPPs are easily handled, easy on fences and pastures (not prone to rooting), and require less feed than traditional pig breeds.
IPP's have short upturned snouts that are perfect for grazing. They have been bred to thrive in a pasture based environment, grazing on grass, yielding a well marbled red meat. All pigs will forage for food, but the shorts snouts really make them a grazing pig. During summer months they get a good portion of their nutrients from grazing on pasture grass, and during winter a main staple of their diet is grass hay and alfalfa or fodder. They also enjoy fresh fruits, veggies, and dairy products but this should only be a small portion of the diet for mature adult IPP's. We also balance our pig's diets with hog minerals and organic kelp.
IPP's reach market weight in the standard 7-9 month time frame, reaching a market weight of 250-275lbs. Boars typically range from 350-450 lbs. Full grown sows range in size from 250-350 lbs, they are great mothers and have a gentle disposition.
IPP's may or may not have wattles, they may have upright or floppy ears, and have varied color patterns including black, white, tan and red.
