American Waltham Watch Co.
Grade - Wm. Ellery.
Model 1857 - Named for the year production began.
SN 275990 - Made in 1867.
This make and model watch was produced during the Civil War and was worn by President Abraham Lincoln. It was “the American Watch Company's first successful industrialized pocket watch with standardized parts”.
I bought this watch from an older lady who said it used to belong to her grandfather. I figured out how to open the cases and wind it and set the time. I was able to find an online database that shows it was made in 1867. Opening the rear case to the movement it appears the time fine tune adjustment lever is missing. I saw one on a picture of the watch but not on the watch itself. The watch runs fine and I didn’t want to touch anything in the movement to see if I was missing something. The watch is showing some wear but I figure someone actually used it and it does look very good. It’s a nice running 158 year old watch. An excellent gift for the history buff or reenactor.
