Label reads: “Handcrafted by Woody, Willy an’ Shorty, descendants of the venerable Harry S stumpf”
Fiddle Factory, Inc. box 500, Hika Bay, Cleveland, WI 53015
This Stumpf Fiddle was made by the founders of the Fiddle Factory (originally in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, now the Party Fiddle Factory in Florence, WI), and the names "Woody, Willy an' Shorty" were likely a playful or generic signature used by the instrument makers, who included brothers Bob and Charlie Cronin and Bill Schwartz. The "venerable Harry S. Stumpf" is a mythical character the creators invented.
A Stumpf Fiddle (also known as a Polka Cello, Boomba, or Devil's Stick) is a traditional folk percussion instrument, often used in Midwestern American polka and bluegrass music. It is not a true fiddle, but rather a "One-man band" instrument constructed from a wooden stick, pie tins, springs, bells, and other noise-making objects (like Burt’s from Mary Poppins..😊).
This is a quintessentially northern mid-west American instrument with Central European influences, played by bouncing it on the ground and striking, strumming, and snapping its various appendages. It is a very folksy instrument and fits right in with bluegrass or polka, you're likely to see people hopping around and dancing while playing one.
