Description
Offered for sale is a genuine 19th-century apothecary / merchant balance scale, dating to approximately 1820–1860. This is an authentic commercial trade instrument — not a modern reproduction or decorative piece.
The scale is hand-forged wrought iron with a twisted central shaft, decorative scrollwork beam arms, and a dual-pan configuration featuring:
• One solid wooden pan
• One chain-suspended iron pan
It includes the original graduated metal weight set, which is increasingly rare to find intact.
The scale is mounted on its original wooden base cabinet, which was purpose-built for the instrument. The iron foot is seated into a hand-chiseled mortise cut to match the forged profile, clearly visible and consistent with early 19th-century craftsmanship.
This piece was originally used in a pharmacy, mercantile, or market setting and has strong appeal for collectors, designers, and historic interiors.
