Reproduction Stoneware Bowl from Clay City Pottery ...$30, cash
The craftspeople at the 129 year old Clay City Pottery produce utilitarian household items similar to those made by their forefathers. The pottery is being operated by the fourth generation of the Griffith family, the original founders of the pottery.
The pottery is made from local clay is produced by a method called jiggering. Although the items are no longer hand turned on a wheel, the process must be guided by hand as the clay is put into large plaster molds which allow a uniform product to be shaped relatively quickly. The resulting product must still be dried, glazed and fired as in the earlier days. The product is fired in a gas fired bee-hive kiln for a period of 72 hours at a temperature of up to 2,300 degrees F.
Because of the method used, this pottery may vary in color, shape and design. As a result, each piece has a character all of its own.
Clay City Pottery Stoneware is very durable making it suitable for oven and microwave cooking. It contains no lead and is safe for all foods. The stoneware is useful for serving foods because it retains heat. The stoneware is dishwasher safe.
