The Isan is also one of the regions of Thailand where traditions are preserved and respected; the Isan culture is influenced by Laos and Lao culture. This influence is represented in their special cooking, handicrafts, music and dance and on the typical Muay Thai Boxing.
The Bo Pan Khan site dates back to the bronze era, when it was a main economic centre of the region due to the rock salt that could be found in the soil. Nowadays, the site is virtually abandoned despite efforts of the Thai government in the 90-ies to attract local tourists.

December 20, 2008 - January 3, 2009

Volunteer project: A massive 6.3-magnitude or 5.9 Richter scale earthquake struck Yogyakarta and south region of Central Java Province on May 27, 2006. The quake struck just before dawn (05.53 am) about 15 miles (25 kilometers) south-southwest of Yogyakarta, near the volcano Mount Merapi. Many people were sleeping and were entombed in their bedrooms. Estimated about 600,000 locals left homeless, much higher than the official figures and many took refuge in makeshift tent cities. Hospitals have been overwhelmed. Field hospitals have been set up, and people have been treated by health care providers on the streets. At the same time, many people were reluctant to enter hospitals because they feared structural damage caused by aftershocks.
In Kemudo Village 7 were found dead, hundreds were injured, almost 85% of the houses collapsed and the rest were seriously damaged, 19 school buildings collapsed. The main aim of the volunteers in the project is to do some small renovation and construction of local buildings. In the field of education, the volunteers will also have opportunity to teach basic English to students and organise some games and sport activities with local children and adults.
Free time: The participants will enjoy the very warm hospitality of the local villagers and will have opportunity to get along with them by conducting sports and traditional games or competitions. In the free time, it’s good chance for the group to visit one of the great Hindu temples, called Prambanan Temple, or visit Yogyakarta City (an old royal capital) and the Royal Palace.

I am in need of 3 or 4 native Japanese speakers who can read and speak English. Proficiency level is not important, and better if varied between speakers. I am writing a paper for a linguistics class and have prepared a 200 word document which the volunteers will read out loud and I will record. Volunteers will also be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire, (first name, experience speaking English, etc.) That's it! If you want, I can even share the results of my research, which will be a body of information about the common pronunciation errors among Japanese speakers who are learning English. I will happily treat all volunteers to a cup of coffee. Thanks and onegaishimasu!

Number of volunteers: 5-25
The clothing closet is a large space full of donated clothing for youth in all of YouthCare’s programs to take from. The clothing closet is constantly receiving new donations that need to be sorted and stored. This is a great project for a small or large group to do. There are no age restrictions on this project, but all participants under the age of 18 will need to have a waiver signed by their parents.

Outdoor Cleanup at Residential Houses
Number of volunteers: 5-10 per site
The residential facilities of YouthCare are located in 3 houses in the community and within the administration building. This volunteer project would entail coming to the sites and mowing grass, raking leaves, planting plants, pressure washing, and cleaning.

Food Collection Volunteers
Number of Volunteers: 2-4
Location: Safeway in the University Village on Sunday’s from 11-4pm
Distribute flyers and information about YouthCare and the type of food that is needed as shoppers enter the store. Collect food when the shoppers leave the store. This is weather dependent, if it is cold and rainy event will not occur.

Holiday Gift Wrapping at Barnes and Noble
Number of Volunteers: 2-4 each hour
December 10th from 1-9pm

Administrative Volunteers
Number of volunteers: varies based on need
Come to the administrative building and help with envelope stuffing’s, mass mailings, sorting, organizing, filling, database entry, etc. This project need varies of time of the year.

Secret Santa’s
Are you interested in making a youth’s holiday wish come true? We are looking for secret Santa’s to sponsor a youth and fulfill their Holiday wish through a gift donation.

Sponsor a House for the Holidays
Number of Volunteers: Any
We are looking for volunteer groups to sponsor each of our 8 housing programs. What each group will provide is:
-A festive atmosphere
-Holiday Lights and Decorations
-Supplies to make a meal or actual pre-made food
While this is especially needed around Thanksgiving and Christmas, we are looking for other holidays as well. Come and decorate for Valentines and make cookies, celebrate Easter through an Easter Egg Hunt, 4th of July through a BBQ, etc.
Orion Center Meal Providers
Number of volunteers: 5-10
Providing meals to homeless youth at the Orion Center is an important step toward creating trusting and caring relationships with the teens who come to YouthCare for help. Lunch and dinner are served Monday through Friday. Groups bring food to the Orion Center (enough for approximately 25 youth) and help serve the meals.

Orion Center Tutors
Help each young person succeed in school. Tutors will go through a training program and then work with youth at the Orion Center and in Residential Programs.
Host a “_________ Drive”
Host a drive at your school, church, work site, or community group to benefit YouthCare. YouthCare will help you with signs, can talk to your groups, and provide support.
Suggested Drives: Pillows, Linens, Food, Toiletries, Socks, Underwear, Blankets, Towels
This is a great opportunity to engage the community and can be done by anyone and anytime

Auction Procurement Volunteers
Come meet with the development team and then work on procuring items for YouthCare’s first annual on-line auction. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are looking for a flexible time commitment, but can help generate the funds that help all of the youth at YouthCare.

One of Kind Volunteers
Do you have a special talent? Can you teach a youth a skill? Can you provide an excursion somewhere? Can you teach a class? Can you fix bikes?
We are looking for volunteers that could come and teach our youth a new skill, or provide access to events or experiences that these youth would otherwise not have. If you have an idea please email development@youthcare.org

Luncheon Volunteers
Are you interested in helping raise money and planning an awesome luncheon? Volunteers are needed to help be help plan, be table captains, check-in and out guests at the event, and post event wrap up. This is the largest fundraiser YouthCare does every year and we would love your help in making it the best yet.

Help us feed the homeless (downtown seattle)

“I Just wanna feed the Homeless”

I volunteer at a homeless shelter that we are closing down due to lack of funding … and it sucks. We were looked at by a number of large grant agencies but apparently a 15 year track record keeping kids off the streets was not enough. I've decided to do my own thing, to escape the politics and do what I am passionate about.

Short Version: I want to gather a group of people who are hard-core passionate about feeding the streets, to give me $20 and 4 hours a month.

We’re going to keep this simple, to provide a low entry point for volunteers as well as low administrative overhead for me. Every other Tuesday, starting at 7pm, we will meet in the common room of my apartment building at 4th and Blanchard. This will be the order of events for the night:

1.	Upon your arrival everyone gives me $10, of which 100% will go into buying food for the following event. If you truly can’t afford the $10 that’s fine, but come talk to me about it instead of just ignoring it.

2.	We’ll spend an hour or so chit chatting, telling stories about last weeks adventures, and listening to tunes while we put provision bags together consisting of: socks, an entrée, canned fruit, granola bar, a sweet of some sort, capri sun, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, napkin, fork, hand warmer, and a resource card. I’ll also give some instruction to new peoples at this time.

3.	Then we’ll hit the streets to distribute, shooting for groups of 3-4, rain or shine. Who knows how many groups we will have, but I know of a number of locations we can go so the more groups the merrier, and I will constantly be scouting out new areas to distribute. Some locations are 5th avenue shopping area, the park near Pike Place Market, and the park near the Union Gospel Mission.

4.	When you are done you go home. I don’t want to attempt to coordinate hooking up after the event, as some groups will take longer than others. There is always the next event to tell stories. It would be nice to get an email from people who are planning to attend the night before each event, just so we know how many bags to make, but this is not a requirement.

That’s it. No politicking. No standing on a soap box. No Board of directors. Just regular people feeding those in need. This should not be such a radical concept, but it kind of is.

The first event is scheduled for October 14th.
But Goa is also known to be a high-risk zone for HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases due to a high rate of sexual tourism. To tackle the problem of the rapid spread of these diseases, awareness program has been conducted all throughout the state for several years with a local group of specialists. This year again several volunteer workcamps will be conducted.
In the first week of the camp, the volunteers will be given a training on the topics HIV/AIDS, STDs, and counseling. Volunteer project: Sokawera village is located in the Banyumas Regency. It lies on the slope of the Slamet Mountain and is surrounded by beautiful rice fields. Sokawera is home to the Argowilis (“Green Mountain”) community centre, a membership based organization created 8 years ago. Argowilis is active in the following fields: education and literacy, women empowerment, micro credit, economical development and environment. The centre gives free education to 700 students (children and adults), organizes activities for street children, supports villagers through micro credit and training programs, develops environmental projects (including reforestation) and runs social and cultural activities on a permanent basis. Both short- and long-term voluntary service activities have been running in Argowilis since December 2006. Argowilis members appreciate the presence of international volunteers and believe in the possibility to improve the centre through the exchange of good practices and ideas with the volunteers.

Through this project, the volunteers will mainly contribute to a new income generating activity Argowilis would like to promote between the villagers: growing rabbits and (re)planting trees. The volunteers will build organic farm and plant trees.

Chickmangalore is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karnataka and has one of the very interesting communities with their very own historical background.

The international volunteer project will be focused on rural development projects in small villages around Chickmangalore which have a need of creative educational support and general awareness in the areas of rainwater harvesting, organic farming and health and hygiene in the low farmland holding families of the region. During the project, volunteers can visit the coffee plantations and also take a walk/trek in the reserve forests. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from manual work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergartens, and raising awareness on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene.

I am from the UK but live here in seattle until I graduate college.
A few of my friends are russian, and I want to be able to have conversations with them in their language, and also be able to communicate with natives when I visit Russia next year. I don't have a time frame to do this, but I would like to start as soon as possible. I would like to reach fluency, so I need to learn in an efficient way--language schools, books, and tapes don't help me as much as interacting with someone.
I live in seattle but am willing to meet somewhere else if necessary.
Please contact me as soon as possible.

Surviving Seattle’s Streets
There are close to 1,000 homeless youth in Seattle every night. They sleep in cars, abandoned buildings, under bridges and on friend’s couches. These young people are often homeless because the streets are safer than home. Many have been abused and abandoned. Their stories are tragic. Once on the streets, kids have few resources to find food, clothing and shelter for survival. Without proper resources youth are more likely to turn to destructive behaviors, such as crime, prostitution and drugs.

Every youth should have a warm place to stay, healthy food, caring adults, and opportunities to grow and succeed. YouthCare delivers services that meet the needs of Seattle’s homeless and at-risk youth.

History
Founded in 1974, YouthCare was the first shelter for homeless youth in the Western United States and continues to be a leader in providing services to this vulnerable population. Beginning as a three-bed shelter for runaways, YouthCare has grown and expanded to become a community-based agency with six sites serving the greater Seattle area.

Today, YouthCare’s services range from street outreach and residential housing to employment training.

Dear Secret Santa’s,

We are looking for Secret Santa's. I want you to know we work with a variety of clients/ participants. The average age is 17-25 years old. Our corporate sponsors and Community Giving Trees restrict the age to teens, young adults and clients with children, which leave our small older population out in the cold. So we are very grateful of your generosity to pick up our older clients/ participants who are 24-29 years old who have been identified during outreach that need help for the holidays.

If you want a teen or child, we do have some in foster care through another agency that we are sponsoring and can make them availible for sponsorship.

Once you pick someone I will send you out their wish/ needs. We are hoping you will commit to one wish/ two needs and a gift certificate per client/ participant you sponsor.

Gifts can be delivered up thru December 23rd, 2008. We will have special evenings set aside on Monday Dec. 22nd and Tuesday Dec. 23rd, 2008 4-9 PM for you to drop off your gifts. Your gifts are tax deductible and I will have letters for you upon delivery.

Delivery Location: PSKS 1814 Summit Avenue, Seattle WA 98122 (206) 371-6387

Thanks,

Work for literacy with a full time, stipended position (Seattle and South King County)

Solid Ground (formerly the Fremont Public Association), is hiring a few more AmeriCorps members for the 2008-2009 year! Come join us and work to fight poverty, illiteracy, and racism! Our next start date is October 16th, so apply today!

Washington Reading Corps (Seattle and South King County teams):

The Achievement Gap is a social justice issue. Research demonstrates that if a child cannot read well by the end of third grade his or her chances for academic success is significantly diminished. Through the Washington Reading Corps, AmeriCorps members provide direct daily tutoring and full-time VISTA members help school communities to harness the talent and energies of parents and community members as volunteer tutors. Last school year WRC schools statewide recruited more than 11,000 volunteers who tutored over 25,000 students, contributing to impressive gains in statewide reading tests. WRC Members of all ages gain experience in direct tutoring, volunteer management, and strengthening community. WRC Members also develop their own leadership skills by participating in team trainings and state-wide Member Development Institutes, as well as by leading local service projects.

Placements are in elementary schools in Seattle, Kent, Highline, and Tukwila School Districts to recruit and train community volunteers and to provide one-on-one and small group tutoring in an effort to increase reading and literacy skills.

Benefits:
As an AmeriCorps or AmeriCorps VISTA member, you will commit to one year of full-time service. In exchange, you will receive:

•	A living allowance of $949 per month, health insurance, monthly bus tickets, and childcare assistance (if income eligible).
•	Education award or stipend. After successful completion of service, AmeriCorps members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725. VISTAs receive an educational award of $4,725 OR a $1200 cash stipend. Additionally, AmeriCorps members can put their student loans into forbearance (so they don’t have to make payments) during their service (contact your lender for more specific information or to confirm your loan status during AmeriCorps or VISTA service).
•	Training, including workshops on issues of interest to the community and leadership and skills development for the non-profit sector.
•	Experience! National service Members gain great job skills and a strong network of contacts among schools and social service agencies in the area.

Volunteer Coordinator Needed for Sunflower Children!

Who we are: Sunflower Children is an international family of non-governmental humanitarian aid organizations providing survival and development care for disadvantaged children throughout the world. Sunflower projects provide survival and developmental support for: Orphans, Children with disabilities (physical and mental), Street Children, Refugees, Children living in poverty (malnutrition, neglect, etc.) Sunflower Children currently supports 12 projects in 8 countries. For a list of our projects, see: A list of Sunflower's Projects

How You Can Help:

We need a volunteer coordinator to help us reach our goal of bettering the lives of the many underprivileged children by helping us to organize Seattle volunteers. The volunteer coordinator will essentially be the liason between our volunteers and our Sunflower coordinator. Responsibilities will include:
- Following up with Sunflower coordinator to determine her needs for events/meetings, etc.
- Coordinating meetings to introduce new volunteers to Sunflower Children
-Posting ads/sourcing volunteers to help with events

Sunflower Children is unique because of our commitment to operating virtually. Most of our work is done via email so that we can operate most efficiently and stay green-friendly!

If you are interested in becoming involved with our innovative and fun organization and simultaneously want to help the underprivileged children in the world, please send us an e-mail.
