WANTED: Fun, responsible adults who want to make a difference in the lives of homeless young adults AND make money to pay for their edumacation!
The Students in Service (SIS) program allows students of participating SIS schools to earn money to pay for education expenses by volunteering with participating agencies around Washington State. The ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is currently looking for SIS volunteers to fill Overnight Supervisor positions at our shelter!

WHO WE ARE:
The ROOTS (Rising Out Of The Shadows) Young Adult Shelter provides overnight shelter to young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 who may not have anywhere else to go. ROOTS is the only shelter in Seattle specifically serving folks in this age group, who often don't feel safe or comfortable in shelters serving older, single adults.
WHAT WE DO:
With the help of our amazing volunteers, ROOTS is open each and every night of the year to provide a safe place for our guests to sleep. We also provide:
- Hot dinner and breakfast in the morning
- Free clothing and hygiene supplies
- Personal hygiene opportunities, such as showers and laundry services
- On-site case management and referral to other support and transitional services
- Visits by healthcare providers (including public health nurses, acupuncturists, and massage therapists)
- Supportive, nurturing relationships between our guests, volunteers, and staff
Overnight Supervisor Job Description
This volunteer position consists of one or two 8pm-8:30am shifts per week (and you do get to sleep!) and two 1.5 hour staff meetings per month (total hours flexible).
DUTIES
Help oversee shelter set-up, delegate tasks to volunteers, complete intake paperwork with new guests, provide back-up support to Shelter Manager/Program Coordinator by enforcing rules, interacting with guests, and providing guidance to volunteers, act as lead staff person throughout the night and morning.
REQUIREMENTS
- 18 years or older
- Excellent communication skills
- Self-motivated
PREFERENCES
- Experience with homeless and/or young adult populations
- Related field of study
- Supervisory experience
This is a great opportunity for people persuing human services or social work degrees. Also, great volunteer experience for folks planning to apply to Medical School.
