Blue Nile is seeking a
Database Administrator to join our Data and Analytics team. The ideal candidate will possess a natural curiosity about how our systems work, and a desire to participate directly in moving the technology platform forward as the company grows. This position will allow you to collaborate with small teams and contribute to a wide variety of projects that are directly connected with an active, growing business.
We use Oracle 11g in a Linux environment. The Oracle eBusiness Suite 11i figures prominently in our order processing, manufacturing and fulfillment process and integrates closely with our custom e-commerce engine. We have a modern, current technology platform free of outdated hardware and software. Our lack of legacy systems means you will work on interesting projects with relevant technologies.
The Data and Analytics team is small and close-knit, allowing members to share the opportunity to work on a wide breadth of new technologies and systems. We work directly with developers, technology leaders and business users. This is a great opportunity for you to bring your database skills to a place where you’ll learn and contribute at many levels.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
- Bring a solid production environment to the next level as the business evolves and grows
- Lead the research, test, and adoption of new technologies and approaches for improving performance, availability, and scalability of database systems
- Ensure effective use of database resources within the company, including software, hardware, data security, business continuity planning, and long-range technology planning;
- Work closely with developers and business users on requirements, system analysis, design and implementation of new features and systems
- Participate in logical and physical data model design and data model ownership, especially while working with developers as an RDBMS expert
- Support day-to day operations: installations, upgrades, patches, cloning, troubleshooting, backups, tuning, monitoring, on-call rotation, capacity planning, performance testing, etc.
- Explore database code, structures, jobs and processes -- challenge assumptions, suggest enhancements and help us evolve
- Ensure the quality, consistency and security of company data and database systems in accordance with regulatory compliance requirements
- Guide disaster recovery planning and testing
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years of enterprise Oracle DBA experience in a Linux or Unix environment
- Mastery of the tools of the trade: Oracle 10g/11g databases including Data Guard, RMAN, and replication; OLTP and data warehouse concepts and strategies; data modeling; database design
- Proven record of good judgment in solving problems and handling technical challenges
- Technical curiosity
- Ability and desire to work with technical and non-technical people
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in the business of selling a luxury product online
- Experience with Oracle eBusiness Suite 11i a plus
