The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is an internationally renowned non-profit research institute dedicated to the study and application of systems biology. Founded in 2000 in Seattle, Washington, ISB's goal is to unravel the mysteries of cellular networks and identify strategies that will usher in a new era of P4 Medicine (predictive, preventive, participatory and personalized medicine).

The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) is a comprehensive and extensive effort to accelerate our understanding of the genetics of cancer (cancergenome.nih.gov). ISB was recently awarded a Genome Data Analysis Center as part of TCGA, and seeks a Bioinformatician to join the Center. The successful candidate will join a diverse team of scientists working together on novel methods for the analysis of TCGA cancer genomics data.

The applicant must be very comfortable working in a team environment, and possess strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail, time management skills and the ability to work independently with a high level of initiative are required.

Required skills and experience:

• A Masters degree, or equivalent, in physical, engineering, or life sciences
• Direct experience working with scientific data, within a scientific research environment.
• Experience with data exploration, processing, and analysis.
• Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, or Ruby), and scripting for unix-based operating systems.
• Experience with extracting, manipulating, and integrating data from public biological data repositories (e.g. NCBI, Ensembl, UCSC).
• Proficiency with bioinformatics tools.

Highly desirable skills and experience:

• Programming and analysis in environments such as MATLAB or R.
• Experience working with genomic data.
• Statistical data analysis.
• Direct experience programming in Java, c, or c++ .

The applicant should include a resume and a brief (1-2 paragraph) statement summarizing her/his interests and experience in bioinformatics.
