The Allen Institute for Brain Science, located in Seattle, Washington, is comprised of a multidisciplinary staff committed to understanding how the brain works and helping to unlock the mysteries of neurological diseases and disorders affecting millions worldwide. We have the following, full-time job opportunity for a Research Associate II in our Methods Development group:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The RA II - Methods Development is responsible for working in the R&D group on a number of key activities in a research and data production environment. This includes development and evaluation of new and emerging technologies in cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy, imaging, histology and tissue processing. Other responsibilities include designing and executing experiments, preparing formal laboratory protocol documentation and working cross-departmentally with Process Engineering and the Production teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop and implement new technologies in cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy, imaging, histology and tissue processing
• Draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documentation for use by other departments
• Assist the Process Engineering department in QA/QC efforts, as needed
• Maintain a clear and accurate laboratory notebook
• Document and prepare reports and/or publications with 100% accuracy and reliability
• Other tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
• Self-motivated and comfortable working in a fast-paced high-throughput laboratory environment.
• Proven ability to design and execute experiments and document work accurately and precisely
• Proven scientific accomplishments through peer-reviewed scientific publications, presentations at scientific conferences and/or technology patents
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize competing tasks in a complex and fast paced laboratory environment
• The ability to work independently and within a team environment
• Knowledge of basic neuroscience, developmental biology and/or bioinformatics is helpful

Required Computer Skills
• MS Office 2007 or XP
• Adobe PhotoShop and/or other image processing or microscopy software
• Statistical analysis programs or software

Education/Experience/Certifications
• BS and 4 or more years of relevant laboratory experience OR
• MS and 2 or more years of relevant laboratory experience OR
• A combination of education and relevant experience
• Experience in immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy, histology and/or tissue processing
• Experience with mouse genetics and/or small animal surgical preparations, strong computational or programming skills, and familiarity or experience with GLP protocols and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is desirable


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Travel Required - Frequency: Possible - from 2 - 6 times per year
• Laboratory atmosphere - possible exposure to chemical, biological or other hazardous substances
• Working at computer and using mouse for extended periods of time
• May be required to be available outside of standard working hours
• Exposure to temperature variances (hot/cold) or outside environments
• Other: Standard research laboratory environment
