POSITION SUMMARY:
This position provides scientific leadership for neuroanatomy aspects of the Allen Institute Human Development Atlas Project. The primary responsibility is to develop and implement strategies for generation of a series of histological reference atlases spanning human development. The secondary responsibility is to provide anatomical expertise for the analysis of histological and in situ hybridization data.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide neuroanatomy expertise and guidance to oversee the creation of a series of histological reference atlases spanning human brain development.
• Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of anatomists, graphic artists, informatics and IT specialists to design and execute on a strategy to create expert-annotated digital human brain reference atlases.
• Lead efforts to develop a neuroanatomical structural ontology for human brain development, working closely with internal staff, expert domestic and international neuroanatomist consultants, and members of external advisory committees.
• Train and provide quality control oversight of graphic artists responsible for tracing structural outlines on digital images of histological brain sections.
• Provide input and feedback to other groups involved in the reference atlas creation and online presentation, including Methods and Production, Informatics and IT.
• Train junior level staff in the analysis of histological and in situ hybridization data.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
• Strong neuroanatomy skills in adult and developing human or non-human primate brain.
• Basic understanding of graphic arts software.
• Very strong communication skills for interface with internal and external scientific groups.
• Significant experience with analysis of histological and in situ hybridization data.
Required Computer Skills
• MS Office
Education/Experience/Certifications
• Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a life science from an accredited institution
• Work experience in a relevant field
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Travel Required – approximately 3 times per year
• Laboratory atmosphere - possible exposure to chemical, biological or other hazardous substances
• Working at computer and using mouse for extended periods of time
• Sitting, standing, bending, squatting as found in typical office environment
• May be required to be available outside of standard working hours
