University Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is located in the heart of the University District. Our congregation is progressive in its theology and has a strong commitment to social justice. University Christian Church’s Children’s Ministry program, named “the Learning Community,” includes approximately 20 elementary and middle school age children. The Learning Community is unique in its composition: it involves children from a diversity of economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds with incredibly varied life experience. As a part of the Learning Community, the nursery provides a safe space for play and activity for our youngest children.
Position Summary & Responsibilities
The Nursery Teacher is responsible for providing supervision to children, ranging in age from infancy to 5 years.
This responsibility entails:
• keeping the nursery space safe and clean for very young children
• ensuring the physical and emotional safety of the children present
• planning age appropriate activities for the children that support our work as a faith community
• creating a learning environment where there is consistent structure and a pre-planned daily routine
• keeping an up-to-date record of attendance and maintaining correct contact information for each child
• working with church staff and volunteers to create a learning and worship environment that is safe and hospitable, both for our children and their families
• building meaningful relationships with the children and their families
• scheduling nursery care for church activities other than the regular Sunday morning schedule on an “as needed” basis (advanced notice will be provided)
Support
The Nursery Teacher reports to our senior minister though regular instruction and supervision will be provided by church members as well as the Minister of Faith Formation and Social Justice.
Compensation & Hours
The Nursery Teacher is expected to be present each Sunday from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm. The position pays $12.60 per hour. An additional thirty minutes per week will be added for necessary planning and preparation. In sum, the Nursery Teacher will be compensated for four hours of work each week. In the summer months, time will be reduced to three hours per week. There will be additional opportunities for extra paid hours that coincide with the church’s worship and fellowship schedule.
Qualifications
Desired
• knowledge of child development age birth to five years
• knowledge of or willingness to learn age appropriate faith development

• Experience supervising and working with young children

• Understanding of cultural diversity
• Acceptance of various beliefs and ways of believing
• Ability to balance the enforcement of structure with the creation of nurturing, life-giving relationships
