Situated in glacial terminal moraines, Hidden Lake is found on the Skilak Lake Loop Road of the Sterling Highway, Kenai Peninsula. This overlook was discovered atop Burney’s Trail, located within the lake’s campground.
The trail up to the overlook is heavily forested and my husband and I noticed deep scratches in the trees all around us from bears marking their territory. It’s a little spooky when you can’t see around the corners so we made sure to blow our whistles every so often.
The trail is only a mile long and fairly easy walking. The overlook at the top makes it all worthwhile, and there’s a little bench where you can sit and take it in. It’s where I did the preliminary sketches for this painting.
Born and raised in Alaska (and still lives there!) Diane Harrison has developed a love for nature in its many forms, and would spend hours drawing and painting the beauty just outside her door. Although mostly self-taught, Diane has earned an arts degree from the University of Alaska and continues to study outside of school.
