Moose is common name for the largest member of the deer family. The name moose, given by the Algonquin, a native North American tribe, means “eater of twigs”.
They are so prevalent on the Kenai Peninsula, especially in the winter; I could always count on seeing them bedded down right outside my cabin windows for a few nights at a time. They would feed on my property during the day and return to the same spot to rest at night, dark figures in the moonlight. They were welcome company and rather accustomed to humans—as long as their space was respected, we got along just fine!
Born and raised in Alaska (and still lives there!) Diane Harrison has developed a love for nature in its many forms, and would spend hours drawing and painting the beauty just outside her door. Although mostly self-taught, Diane has earned an arts degree from the University of Alaska and continues to study outside of school. She works mostly in oil and watercolor but also enjoys pencil. “What I love most about nature is that everyone is equal in it, no matter what his background is, his income, or his status in life.”
