Are you a beginner who desires (and understands the importance of) a strong foundation?

Perhaps you have some singing experience, but now realize that you bypassed that all-important foundation and are experiencing problems or are unable to progress any further as a result?

I am a classically trained singer with 30+ years of experience in various performance genres, in addition to teaching experience. I will assess your voice and your ear during our initial session. If I feel I can help you, I will teach you the techniques of proper breathing, support, breath control, intonation, vocal health, diction, etc. Vocal exercises will be liberally employed throughout your lesson time, as they are the very best tool to help develop and strengthen your voice, eliminate/smooth 'breaks' (i.e., passagios), and eventually expand your vocal range, if possible.

Once you have established a strong foundation and are ready to grow, I will teach you about dynamics and how to phrase a tune artistically so that you can properly and effectively tell its story. A good voice is only part of the picture; dynamics, phrasing, a good ear and rhythmic sense are other important/essential elements of the equation.

I accept male and female students, teenage through adult. However, I will NOT accept young males whose voices are in the process of change. We'd like to meet similar-aged, local musicians and singers whose talent fits our cool, hip, rock 'n roll, blues, reggae agenda. If you have some chops, you can join a hard-driving 60-something rock-band for a week. You can check us out at a local performance first.

I envision it can work as follows. First, go to The Play Pen on Pacific in Lacey on a Sunday evening, which is Blues OPEN MIC night. Ask for, or hide and watch for the PLEASE FORCE Band. That's us. If you are ready (sing or play rock/blues/reggae), we might be able to try something together that night.

Otherwise, we will practice your song a few times the next week then play it with you at Play Pen's open mike Sunday Eve within a week or so. Working on a song is like practicing a short play, so we want to have fun but work hard enough to get a good musical result. If you NEVER played or sang before, this is likely not be the place to begin.

You can get some fun from being onstage, or you can bring friends and get photographs.
