Part dance and part martial art, Doce Pares Escrima offers special training in a couples-based movement style. Individuals and beginners are also welcome in this class! The class features a traditional mode of self defense training, of which dance is an integral element that makes it uniquely suited for couples wishing to train together. In the Filipino culture from which this art evolved, the authenticity of the native martial art during the age of Spanish imperialism was maintained by disguising its practice within festival dances. This practice has survived and thrived through the centuries via personal instruction from teacher to student and is available for the health and benefit of practitioners today. Doce Pares Escrima is actually a very effective system of defending oneself with and against batons, knives, and other weapons, and provides tools for facing adversity outside of the realm of physical harm as well. For example, the traditional techniques used in class are useful for coping with everyday stress. These techniques include aerobics and group meditation and also provide a relatively safe arena for the discharge of personal or relational tension.
