Instructor: Nils Osmar
Sponsored by: ASUW Experimental College
Location: University of Washington campus (Seattle branch)
Dates and times: Sundays 10 am-11:45 pm, July 20-August 10
Course fee (for General Public): $99
In this workshop, you'll learn how to
create your own cartoon characters, working in a humorous "Sunday
Funnies" style, even if you've never drawn before.
We'll draw humorous, simplified faces and figures, cartoon animals
and more. Plus: inking, coloring, copyrighting your artwork
and getting published. (And a section about drawing comic
books.) The instructor's artwork has been published in the U.S.
and Europe. Nothing to bring or buy; all materials are provided. (Scroll
down for registration information)
Who teaches the class? Seattle artist/art instructor Nils Osmar. Nils has been teaching drawing and painting classes for over ten years, and makes most of his living as an artist.
I've never drawn before. Should I take this class, or take
the Drawing for beginners class first? Most beginning drawing
classes teach people how to draw from life and photos, using graphite
and charcoal on newsprint and other types of paper. While these
skills are helpful to artists of other sorts, they're not really
applicable to cartooning, which is usually done in pencil and
ink, and is based on drawing from imagination, not life.If you
are looking for an introductory drawing class, check out Drawing
for absolute beginners. But it's fine to take CARTOONING even
if you've never drawn before, or taken any other art classes.

Does the class cover cartoon figures, or just faces? Both.
It covers several different types of cartoon figures, from the
ones you would see in the Sunday funnies to those in comic books.
It also covers cartoon faces and expressions, how to get your
work published, finishing cartoons in ink with brushes and pens,
and how to color cartoons in Photoshop. We'll also have a session
where we focus on drawing humorous cartoon-style animal characters,
and another session where you'll learn how to draw characters
in a "superhero" style, and create your own comic strips.
Is it really possible to learn the basics of cartooning in
only four weeks? You can definitely learn the basics. One
of the things that makes cartooning so much fun to learn is that
it's an art form you can move into and become skilled at after
learning just a few quick, basic things.
Does the class cover drawing superheroes and comic books?
It does cover some information about superheroes, but if you
are looking for a class specifically in drawing comic books, you
should also sign up for Drawing
comic books and graphic novels, sponsored by the Wonder
School of the arts (a different school, also in Seattle) (There
is no connection between the Experimental College and the Wonder
School; they are different schools and classes, but taught by
the same instructor.)
What ages are the students in the class? Most of the students
are adults, but sometimes younger students attend. A typical class
might consist of nine or ten adults, one or two teenagers, and
one or two kids. If a very young student is interested in taking
the class, we ask that an adult either take the class with him
or her, or, wait in a nearby classroom in case of an emergency.
But again, be aware that it is a serious art class and that most
of the students taking it will be adults.
Can you tell me more about the instructor?

I appreciated how you covered all of the basics, and took the
time to answer student questions. - Michelle G., Seattle
Nils is thoughtful, paces the class well, and treats everyone
with respect. There were twelve adults and three youngsters in
the class. He took all of the students seriously, listened to
all of their questions with the same respect - K.L., Bellevue
The class was excellent. I learned exactly what I was hoping to.
I'll be taking more of the instructor's art classes in the future.
- Chris K., Redmond
It was fun! Before the class I was drawing one figure over and
over again, and didn't know how to move her around. I feel great
now, I can draw all kinds of characters and expressions. - Melanie
T., Seattle
Nils is an amazing artist, and I would say, an excellent teacher.
I learned exactly what I was hoping for, and have been drawing
steadily since the class. I'll be back for more. - J.W., Bellevue
The demonstration on coloring cartoons in Photoshop was great!
- Keith L, Seattle
I really enjoyed all the artistic side of the class. Drawing,
getting feedback, new ideas, all of it. The instructor did a great
job all the way around with this. (unsigned)
The topic is not one often taught, having a class available to
the general public on cartooning was the best part about the class.
The teacher was knowledgable and did a good job... (unsigned)
It was really fun and do-able! (unsigned)
Thanks Nils! It was excellent. - Ken S.
